#JazzHerStory ~ Joya Sherrill

Did you know that Joya [Joyce] Sherrill (August 20, 1924 – June 28, 2010) wrote the well know lyrics to "Take the A Train" in 1942? Joya was an American jazz vocalist and children's television show host. She began her career with Duke Ellington in 1942 when she was seventeen after writing the lyrics to the well known Billy Strayhorn tune (written as an instrumental in 1939) while listening to the radio in her living room. Her father pitched the tune to Duke Ellington and that jumpstarted her career! Ellington considered her one of his favorite singers.

Joya also co-write the lyrics to Kissing Bug, with Billy Strayhorn & Rex Stewart, 1945.
